Residents Find Themselves Plowed In Along Cul-De-Sac In Upstate Dover
DOVER, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Snow may be piled high everywhere, but a cul-de-sac in a small upstate town near Poughkeepsie gave a whole new meaning to the term dead-end.
As CBS 2's Steve Langford reported, snow removal in the town of Dover left some residents plowed in.
The massive pile was blocking the cul-de-sac at the end of Stone Pine Lane in Dover, as a result of a perfect storm of well over a foot of snow and a plow job by the town that has created a veritable blockade of a snowbank.
"This is ridiculous," said one man who lives on the block. "This is almost spiteful."
The Town of Dover sent a plow by early Friday, but for some reason, snow removal stopped halfway around the circle drive at the end of the block, leaving a wall of the white stuff.
"They've blocked us in. We can't get out," resident Alyssa Schepanik.
Schepanik said she spent three and a half hours shoveling to clear a good portion of the plowed-in cul-de-sac by hand.
"I pay taxes," she said. "So I thought the taxes would cover them coming and plowing."
The six-foot pile of snow has been a blast for the kids. But for some trapped behind the wall, it was alarming.
"I have a son who is asthmatic, and let alone, his asthma started acting up this week, if I had to take him out of here in an emergency case," said resident Miguel Gonzalez.
A short drive over to the Dover Town Hall revealed that not one, but two pieces of equipment cleaning out a mostly empty parking lot. A town official blamed the slow response to the snow barrier on Stone Pine Lane on the breakdown of one of the town's small plows.
And the plows did arrive on Stone Pine Lane about an hour after CBS 2 arrived.
"Thank you," Schepanik said. "It wouldn't have been done otherwise. Thank you."
