Residents Demand Action Following Serious Accident At Bronx Intersection
NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- Another serious car accident at a dangerous Bronx intersection has residents demanding action.
"Somebody up there must have been watching me," Bob Brant told CBS 2's Hazel Sanchez.
There is a good reason why Brant is thanking a higher power. He was smashed by a speeding car while driving on Tuesday night, and is still alive.
"I'm happy I'm sitting here talking to you," Brant said.
Brant told CBS 2's Sanchez that he was crossing the notoriously dangerous intersection in the Pelham Bay section of the Bronx.
"Got to the corner. Stopped at the stop sign. I proceeded through and all of a sudden, bam! The car spun around," he recalled.
Witnesses said that the driver was flying down Crosby Avenue and hit Brant as he was crossing the intersection at Coddington Avenue.
The driver knocked down a light post just before jumping a curb and hitting a parked car with two people sitting inside.
"We heard this loud noise. I said 'oh my god, that guy's gotta be doing 90,' that's why we need a light," Mary Colins said.
Colins took cell phone pictures of the accident. She and her neighbors said that countless accidents have happened at the intersection because drivers battle with blind spots and speeding cars. She has been fighting for a traffic light for more than 50 years.
"I don't know what the DOT is waiting for. Do they need a fatality?" Colins wondered.
City Councilman James Vacca has joined the crusade for safety.
"Just two weeks ago I received a letter from NYC DOT denying the most recent request that my office made for this light," Vacca said, "We want this case reopened. We have to have a traffic light here."
The Department of Transportation is looking into Tuesday's accident, but would not comment further about the intersection's future.
