Required Drug Test Policy Causes Uproar At New Jersey High School
OLD TAPPAN, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Parents and students at a New Jersey high school are upset over a new plan to conduct random drug tests.
The tests would be administered on students in extracurricular activities at Northern Valley Regional High School in Old Tappan, N.J.
Students voiced their objections at a recent board meeting. One of the students wore a striped prison uniform costume in protest.
"Ladies and gentleman of the board, I have come here today to ask you to look down upon me as a criminal, not because I have engaged in anything unlawful, but because this," he said as he pointed to the costume, "is how a (random drug testing) policy would make kids feel."
The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled it is constitutional to test public school students for drugs randomly in extracurricular activities.
