Report: Yankees Agree To Terms With 'Starter' Martin
NEW YORK (WFAN) -- MLB.com's Alden Gonzalez reports that the Yankees have agreed to terms with free agent Russell Martin, and according to Martin's agent, New York views him as a "starting catcher."
Martin became a free agent earlier this month, when the Los Angeles Dodgers declined to tender him a contract for 2011.
It was thought around baseball circles that prospect Jesus Montero would get first-crack at the Yankees' starting job, after GM Brian Cashman told Jorge Posada last month to prepare for extended time at DH.
Martin's contract agreement with New York could indicate that the Yankees aren't sold on Montero's readiness for next season.
The 27-year-old native Canadian had a sub-par 2010 season, which was cut short in August with a labrum tear in his right hip.
