Report: Yankees Showing Interest In Rays Ace David Price
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The Yankees have not lived up to their lofty expectations, but they come into Tuesday night's game against Toronto just 2 1/2 games behind the first-place Blue Jays and one game out of a Wild Card berth.
So yes, they're very much in the playoffs mix with the season nearly halfway over.
The offense -- loaded with veteran All-Star players -- has been subpar, and the pitching staff has been beset by injuries. CC Sabathia is out until at least July, Michael Pineda is not expected back before August and Ivan Nova had season-ending Tommy John surgery.
So will the Yankees look to make a move to bolster their pitching staff?
According to a report, New York is very interested in Rays ace David Price, and the organization is doing its due diligence. A host of Yankees scouts were on hand to watch the three-time All-Star's start against Houston last week.
The Rays (31-47) own the worst record in the majors, and they figure to be sellers as the trade deadline inches closer. The 2012 American League Cy Young Award winner is earning $14 million this season and is arbitration-eligible next season.
According to ESPN's Buster Olney, the small-market Rays are ready to deal the 28-year-old right now. No deal is imminent, however.
The Yankees could certainly take on Price's contract, but do they have the pieces to acquire the superstar left-hander? And even if they do, would the Rays trade within the division? It certainly won't be easy for general manager Brian Cashman to bring Price to the Bronx.
The 2012 AL wins leader and ERA champion is 5-7 on the season with a 3.81 ERA and 1.12 WHIP. His command had been spectacular, having recorded 133 strikeouts to just 13 walks.
