Report: Yankees Reach New Deal With Kevin Long
NEW YORK (WFAN/AP) -- According to the New York Post, the Yankees have agreed to a three-year deal with hitting coach Kevin Long.
"Long, the hitting coach whose three-year deal worth about $1.2 million expired yesterday, will receive a raise. Next season will be Long's sixth handling Yankees hitters.
"General manager Brian Cashman said earlier this week that getting Girardi's deal done -- he signed a three-year deal worth $9 million -- was the first priority, then he wanted to get the coaches' contracts taken care of. It is believed third-base coach Rob Thomson, first-base coach Mick Kelleher and bench coach Tony Pena will return. All of their contracts expired yesterday."
In the meantime, the Yankees' organizational meetings to address offseason plans are underway.
General manager Brian Cashman, president Randy Levine and senior adviser Gene Michael were among the team officials participating in meetings at the Yankees' complex in Florida with managing general partner Hal Steinbrenner.
Coming off an American League championship series loss to Texas, establishing budget figures and negotiating strategies for potential free agents — a list that includes Rangers ace Cliff Lee and Tampa Bay left fielder Carl Crawford — are two of the discussion items.
New York also needs to work out new contracts with shortstop Derek Jeter, closer Mariano Rivera and left-hander Andy Pettitte, should he decide not to retire.
