Report: Yankees In Talks To Acquire David Freese From Cardinals
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- It remains to be seen if Alex Rodriguez will play next season, and the Yankees are entertaining potential backup plans in the event that A-Rod is suspended for 2014.
One name to keep an eye on? David Freese.
According to the New York Daily News, the Yankees have discussed a trade that would send the Cardinals' third baseman to the Bronx.
It isn't clear what the National League champions would want from New York in return, the newspaper reported.
Freese was both the National League Championship Series MVP and the World Series MVP for St. Louis in 2011. The 30-year-old put himself on the map in that postseason, setting an MLB record for RBIs in those playoffs with 21.
The 30-year-old was an All-Star in 2012, but he had a down year in 2013. The right-handed hitter batted .262 with nine home runs and 60 RBIs in 138 games.
Despite the distinct possibility that A-Rod will miss 2014, Yankees team president Randy Levine said on Wednesday that the organization is planning on the three-time American League MVP being on the field.
"We are under the impression that he's going to come back," Levine said. "That's the way we've budgeted it. That's the way we think. We have no control over that and we've never had any control. That process is going on and it will be over with by the end of the year. That's what I'm told."
The 14-time All-Star is currently appealing his 211-game suspension that was handed down by Major League Baseball in early August.
