Woman Killed In Christmas Day Hit-And-Run Accident Carried Wish List Of Her Dreams
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A Brooklyn woman who dreamed of a better life for herself and her son was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver on Christmas morning. Police are now hunting for that driver.
Donna Fountain, 38, of Crown Heights had a lifetime of dreams she hoped to accomplish for herself and her 8-year-old son, Elijah, dreams that died with her on Sunday.
"That's a shame. Honestly, it really is," neighbor Abby Ford told CBS 2's Scott Rapoport.
"It made me feel sad. I actually felt tears appearing in my eyes. I wanted to cry," added neighbor Shonta Gonzales.
Police said Fountain was run down by a gray vehicle as she crossed Eastern Parkway and Troy Avenue. The car sped away, leaving Fountain dying in the street.
At the scene of the accident, police found a wrinkled, well worn piece of paper. It was a list of Fountain's dreams -- in her own handwriting -- which she carried with her everywhere.
Her neighbor, Dena Baveghems, shared it with Rapoport.
"It was very important to her that she accomplish all of the things that she wrote down," Baveghems said.
Fountain's five dreams ... in her own words:
* "Work on my dream job."
* "To buy a house by 45."
* "Start housing for gay and lesbian teens."
* "Marry the woman of my dreams."
* "Make sure Elijah graduates from college!"
"I can't imagine Elijah without his mom right now," Baveghems said.
Police are actively investigating the hit and run and asking for the public's help, while friends and family are mourning the loss of this hard-working, single mother who lived for her son and dreamed of so much for them both.
"She's a very good woman. I hope God's got her in heaven. I know she is because she's very, very good," neighbor Jose Morales said.
Her dreams of ambition and good deeds … sadly reduced to mere words on a piece of paper.
Neighbors said Fountain's son is now staying with relatives while the family plans her funeral.
Fountain was one of two people killed in hit and run incidents over the Christmas weekend. Early Monday morning, a 23-year-old was struck and killed near Mosholu Parkway and Goulden Avenue.
