Report: Wang 'Likely' To Sign Minor League Deal With Yankees
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Chien-Ming Wang earned a workout with the Yankees on Wednesday after his strong showing in the World Baseball Classic.
A minor league deal with his former team could be next.
"People within the organization said they believe Wang's signing is likely," the New York Post reported Thursday.
Wang was one of the Yankees' top starters before a 2008 foot injury derailed his career. He went 55-26 in five seasons in the Bronx and was a two-time 19-game winner (2006-07).
The 32-year-old threw 12 scoreless innings in the WBC for the Chinese Taipei team.
"I think he was as high as 93 in the WBC, so we wanted to take a look, and he was agreeable," Yankees manager Brian Cashman said Wednesday. "We have some vacancies in the rotation in (Triple-A) Scranton, so we're exploring all our options, and he showed interest in coming back. He obviously had a great time with us and if he has to do a minor-league deal, he'd probably rather do it here."
Alan Chang, Wang's agent, told the Post he's talked with multiple teams and doesn't have a timetable to put pen to paper on a contract.
Wang had shoulder surgery in 2009 and eventually landed with the Washington Nationals.
