Report: Surgery On Vocal Chords 'Went Well' For Yankees' Rivera
NEW YORK (WFAN/AP) — Yankees closer Mariano Rivera underwent surgery Friday to remove polyps from his vocal chords.
Rivera's agent, Fern Cuza, told the New York Daily News that the procedure "went well" and "as planned."
Cuza hadn't spoken to Rivera, but got "the green light that everything went fine" from the closer's wife, Clara, the paper reported.
Talking Thursday at a charity event, Rivera said the operation at New York-Presbyterian Hospital will prevent him from speaking for a week.
"I don't like surgery, but the sooner, the better," he said.
Rivera had 44 saves this season to increase his career total to a record 603.
The 42-year-old now must wait for biopsy results.
"I talked to the doctor and she said it doesn't look like anything serious," said Rivera. "But we have to take it to the lab and find out."
