Report: State Testing Electronic Systems To Help Prevent Trucks From Striking Overpasses
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- State officials are reportedly testing an electronic detection system in Westchester County aimed at preventing trucks from crashing into low overpasses.
The system, being auditioned by the Department of Transportation, will use an infrared beam to detect tall trucks and trigger an electronic warning signal, The Journal News reported. The system is expected to be in place by the end of November at five Hutchinson River Parkway entrance ramps, according to the report.

Earlier this summer, DOT spokesman Bo Duffy told WCBS 880 the agency prefers the infrared system to a physical barrier such as a height bar because "we don't want to damage someone's truck or put someone in danger."
The number of trucks hitting parkway bridges in Westchester has been cut in half since large warnings were painted on the pavement. But occasionally, out-of-state truckers following GPS still stray and get stuck.
