Report: Mets, Wright 'Plan To Intensify' Talks; What About Dickey?
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Good news, Mets fans.
The Amazin's "plan to intensify negotiations" with David Wright after picking up next season's option on the All-Star third baseman, according to the New York Daily News.
The Mets and Wright are in talks on a long-term extension, CBSSports.com and WFAN baseball insider Jon Heyman reported Tuesday.
Movement has been described as slow, though the Daily News expected "discussions to accelerate immediately," citing a source.
The Mets owe Wright $16 million on next season's option, but hope to rip that up in favor of a new contract. General manager Sandy Alderson has said his top offseason priority is locking up Wright and knuckleballer R.A. Dickey.
Dickey's $5 million option was also picked up Tuesday. There's a "genuine possibility" the 38-year-old could be traded if a deal can't be reached, the Daily News reported.
Wright, who will turn 30 on Dec. 20, is the Mets' face of the franchise and all-time hits leader. He averaged .306 with 93 RBIs and 41 doubles in 2012.
Dickey pitched himself into Cy Young Award contention this past season with 20 wins and a National League-best 230 strikeouts.
