Report: Maximum Sentence For Brooklyn Man Who Killed, Chopped Up Roommate
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A southern Brooklyn man has been sentenced to a maximum life term for killing his roommate and hacking him into thousands of pieces, according to a published report.
Sergey Mamonov, 51, was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison by Brooklyn Judge Neil Firetog Monday, according to a New York Post report. During the sentencing hearing, prosecutors said Mamonov showed no remorse for the crime, the newspaper reported.
Mamonov, of Sheepshead Bay, was convicted by a jury earlier this month of the 2012 murder of his roommate, 55-year-old Aleksandr Zilbergleyt.
A criminal complaint last year said Mamonov told police he beat his roommate to death during a fight on March 25 and carved up his body.
Authorities said Mamonov tried to dissolve the dismembered parts in vats of bleach. Some of the vats were found in the refrigerator of their Sheepshead Bay apartment along with bleach bottles and bones.
Mamonov also pulverized Zilbergleyt's brain in a meat grinder, according to the newspaper report.
When police made the grisly discovery at Mamonov's apartment at 3395 Nostrand Ave., they reportedly found Mamonov watching television.
Published reports said Mamonov told police he killed his roommate in a fight over a loud party. A teenager in an apartment below where the two men lived said he heard screaming and a loud noise, but he didn't call the police because the sounds ended very quickly, 1010 WINS' Carol D'Auria reported at the time.
