Report: Man Charged With Slamming Into Officer On Long Island
UNIONDALE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A police officer in Nassau County was struck and wounded by a man fleeing a traffic stop Friday night, according to a published report.
Robert Robinson, 26, of the Long Island town of Inwood, was pulled over for talking on his cell phone as he headed west on Jerusalem Avenue in Uniondale, Newsday reported.
Upon pulling Robinson over, police saw a clear plastic bag with what looked like cocaine in the center console, the newspaper reported. Officers ordered Robinson out of his 1998 Buick, but he instead drove off and hit an officer, the newspaper reported.
Robinson also slammed into a parked Jeep, causing the Jeep to hit a street sign, the newspaper reported.
The officer whom Robinson hit tried to remove him physically from the car, but Robinson accelerated and threw the officer from the vehicle, the paper reported.
Robinson eventually ditched his car on Angevine Street in Hempstead, and was seen running down Cruikshank Avenue and throwing something into the front yard of a house, the paper reported.
Officers finally caught up to Robinson, but he refused to be handcuffed and got into a fight with officers, the paper reported.
He was charged with possession of a controlled substance, second-degree assault, resisting arrest, tampering with physical evidence, reckless driving, and leaving the scene of an auto accident with property damage, and he also received numerous traffic tickets, the paper reported.
