Report: Lung Cancer Number One Cancer Killer In New York State
ALBANY, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) - Lung cancer remains the deadliest form of cancer in New York State.
The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network's recently-released statistics found there will be an estimated 8,800 lung cancer deaths statewide this year.
That amounts to more than a quarter of all cancer deaths in New York.
The statistics also showed there will be about 109,440 new cancer cases across the state this year. The most common forms of cancer are prostate, breast and lung, according to the ACS CAN.
A separate report from the American Cancer Society found that in some parts of New York, the smoking rate exceeds the national average.
New York State generates more than $2 billion annually from tobacco taxes and other tobacco revenues, according to the ACS.
The ACS CAN report estimated 21,530 new cancer cases this year in Connecticut and 50,650 new cases in New Jersey.
