Report: LIRR To Spend $14 Million To Replace Recently Upgraded Escalators
NEW YORK (AP) -- The Long Island Rail Road plans to spend $14 million to replace six escalators that were upgraded less than two years ago.
Newsday says the work on the six Babylon line escalators is the railroad's latest effort to increase reliability. It comes after the death of an 88-year-old woman whose clothes got entangled in the escalator treads at the Lindenhurst station in 2012.
The paper says the Lindenhurst escalator along with five others will be replaced through the MTA's 2014-2019 capital plan.
They are expected to be running by summer 2016. The other stations are in Amityville, Baldwin, Rockville Centre, Freeport and Copiague.
The work comes after the LIRR spent $5 million on repairs and upgrades on 11 of its oldest escalators including the six that will be replaced.
