Report: Knicks, Guard J.R. Smith 'Closing In' On Deal
NEW YORK (WFAN) -- The Knicks may soon be adding a player to their boosted backcourt.
According to the New York Daily News, the Knicks are close to signing free agent shooting guard J.R. Smith.
Smith, a first-round draft pick in 2004, would likely receive the team's $2.5 million cap exception, the Daily News reported.
The Knicks would need to free up a roster spot if they sign Smith.
Unbelievably, the Daily News said Knicks sensation Jeremy Lin "would have been the most likely candidate" to be released had he not been given a chance to ignite the team nearly two weeks ago.
Over seven seasons, Smith has averaged 12.5 points per game on 42.8 percent shooting. The 26-year-old recently returned from China, where he had been playing without an NBA opt-out clause since the lockout.
The Knicks have won seven games in a row behind Lin since Feb. 4.
