Report: Knicks' Grunwald 'Refused To Answer' Hotel Room Door For Rockets
NEW YORK (WFAN) -- Talk about Lin-gering over a decision.
The Rockets had so much trouble getting their Jeremy Lin-signed offer sheet to Knicks general manager Glen Grunwald that they had to ask the NBA for assistance, according to the Houston Chronicle.
The Knicks ultimately decided not to match Houston's three-year, $25.1 million offer. But that was after Grunwald "refused to answer the door to his room at the Mandarin Oriental or come to the front desk to accept the offer sheet," the Chronicle reported.
Also according to the paper, Grunwald wouldn't set up a meeting and wasn't available to take the offer sheet during his team's practices. Under league rules, the Knicks would have 72 hours to match -- or not -- once the offer sheet was delivered.
"We asked the league for help," Rockets general manager Daryl Morey told the Chronicle. "They gave us advice. We did what they suggested. They say they consider it a team-to-team issue."
The Knicks completed a sign-and-trade for point guard Raymond Felton soon afterward. Even with the Felton acquisition and the reports that New York wouldn't match, Morey felt anything but certain that he had landed Linsanity.
"I had seen the reports, but the only thing I thought was concrete was when Glen told Jeremy," said Morey. "I knew then they wouldn't tell Jeremy unless it was done. That was the first time I really thought it. We got him."
