Report: Jets, Revis' Agents 'Haven't Talked For Weeks'; Trade-Seekers Hindered
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The Jets are reportedly looking to trade Darrelle Revis.
But they're making it difficult to strike a deal, according to Yahoo! Sports.
Jets general manager John Idzik hasn't given Revis' agents, Neil Schwartz and Jonathan Feinsod, the go-ahead to talk with clubs wondering whether the cornerback is healthy and willing to be more than just a one-year rental, Yahoo! Sports reported.
"If I'm making this deal, there's a lot of stuff I need to know," an executive for one NFC team told Yahoo! Sports. "I need to know if he's healthy. I need to know if he wants to play for us. I need to know if I'm going to get a long-term deal or is this one year and we'll see.
"But I talk to the Jets and they're like, 'OK, what are you offering?' I can't begin to figure it out."
Revis — widely considered the NFL's top cornerback — has been rehabbing from a torn ACL suffered early in the 2012 season. The 27-year-old will become an unrestricted free agent after the upcoming season if he doesn't skip any mandatory team activities.
He'll be looking to sign one of the NFL's most lucrative contracts for a defensive player — something the rebuilding Jets might not be willing to dole out.
According to Yahoo! Sports, the Jets and Revis' agents "haven't talked for weeks," and there "has been almost no contact" between Idzik and the four-time Pro Bowler.
Trades can't be made official until March 12. The market for Revis could shrink considerably once teams fill their needs via free agency.
Another source told Yahoo!: "What the Jets are creating is a situation where (the agents) have to beat them. Teams are saying, 'OK, we're trading picks for you, what kind of discount are we getting on the contract?' Well, why should (Revis) give somebody a discount when he can just wait it out and get his money? It makes no sense."
Idzik reportedly shopped Revis to several teams — discussions believed to be at the behest of owner Woody Johnson — at the combine in Indianapolis, with coach Rex Ryan and the rest of the organization "out of the loop," the New York Daily News reported last month.
The San Francisco 49ers have been reported to have interest in Revis, though that has been disputed. It's the same for the Denver Broncos, who "have expressed interest" in the cornerback, according to ESPN. But wait a moment -- the Broncos "have NO intention of acquiring" Revis, tweeted Jeff Legwold of the Denver Post.
There's also "a rumor brewing in certain NFL circles that Eagles general manager Howie Roseman has been crunching the numbers and putting together an offer" to bring Revis to the Birds, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.
"Others around the league aren't buying it," the Inquirer added.
Despits the swirling speculation, an obviously irked Revis wants to remain with the Jets, the New York Post reported.
"(The trade reports) hit home," Revis told Seahawks fullback Michael Robinson for "The Real Robinson Report," which was posted to YouTube last week. "This definitely hit home especially being one of the best players out there and come to find out you're getting shopped. Yeah, it really hits home. But my main focus is it really doesn't matter where I be at, I know what I can do. I'm confident in what I do. … Whether it be there with the New York Jets or if it be with another team, I have to do what I have to do and play ball and do my services for that team."
