Report: After Drafting Smith, Jets Considering Cutting Mark Sanchez
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Geno Smith is the new franchise quarterback of the Jets, and behind the scenes, it appears that Mark Sanchez's days are numbered in New York.
According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, sources close to the Jets say that Gang Green is planning to release Sanchez and end the "Sanchize." The former 2009 first-round draft pick is due $8.25 million whether he plays for the Jets or not. Sanchez counts for $12.85 million against the salary cap. If the Jets cut him between now and June 1, New York would be assessed a $12.35 million cap hit this year and $4.8 million hit next year.
Currently, it's a six-way logjam at quarterback on the Jets' roster. Gang Green are carrying Smith, Sanchez, Tim Tebow, David Garrard, Greg McElroy and Matt Simms.
Tebow is winning support in the organization by showing up to Jets facilities in better shape. Number 15 has dropped 15 pounds in an effort to remain with the Jets.
Meanwhile, Garrard is seen as a more trusted mentor to help Smith learn the ropes. This factor could make the Jets' potential decision to cut Tebow that much easier.
