Report: Jeremy Lin 'Surprised' Knicks Didn't Strike First In Free Agency
NEW YORK (WFAN) -- By all accounts, the Knicks are expected to match Jeremy Lin's offer sheet from the Houston Rockets, reportedly worth around $29 million over four years.
But they might have some explaining to do.
"He was surprised that the Knicks didn't make the first move," a source told the New York Daily News. "They know they've got to mend some fences with him because he believes what the Rockets have told him, that the Knicks weren't as interested as they are."
The Knicks will have three days to match once Lin puts pen to paper on the offer from Houston, but they will "likely" take care of it today, according to the New York Post. The team has repeatedly said they plan to keep Linsanity alive at MSG.
New York is worried that the point guard "feels slighted" and has "turned a little frosty" from the experience, reported the Daily News, whose source said Lin "has to learn ... that it's not personal."
"The Knicks merely played by the rules," the source said.
Lin disputed the report on Wednesday.
"Lol why do u guys believe everything?" he tweeted. "No quotes from me = probably not true."
Houston waived Lin last December. The Harvard product was claimed by New York and found global fame with a stunning stretch of play in February.
The 23-year-old averaged 14.6 points and 6.2 assists last season. Lin's season was cut short after just 35 games — 25 starts — due to arthroscopic surgery on his right knee.
"Absolutely he's going to be back," Knicks coach Mike Woodson told the Post in June. "We like what he brings to the table. He's our starting point guard. He's a young point guard who's still learning, and he's going to be better. … Absolutely, he wants to be here."
