Report: Geese Again Rounded Up For Slaughter At Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The U.S. Department of Agriculture rounded up more than 260 geese at the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge and took them away for slaughter Tuesday, according to a published report.
The geese were taken away in an effort to prevent bird strikes involving planes flying out of John F. Kennedy International Airport, according to a New York Daily News report. They were be taken to food banks.
This is the second year in a row that geese have been rounded for slaughter at the wildlife refuge. More than 700 were hauled off around this time last year.
Last year, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) introduced a bill authorizing authorities to remove Canada geese from the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge in June and July when the birds are molting and cannot fly.
Goose eradication was authorized in New York City after birds were sucked into both engines of U.S. Airways Flight 1549 out of LaGuardia in 2009.
About a dozen geese and goslings were also rounded up in Inwood Hill Park, in far northern Manhattan, last month, the newspaper reported.
