Report: Gang Member Sentenced In Shooting That Wounded 5-Year-Old

ELIZABETH, N.J. (AP) -- A gang member has been sentenced to 16 years in prison for his role in a northern New Jersey street shooting that left a 5-year-old boy seriously injured.

Nineteen-year-old Jose Rodriguez of North Plainfield must serve nearly 15 years of the term imposed Friday before he becomes eligible for parole.

Rodriguez had pleaded guilty last November to attempted murder charges.

Union County prosecutors say Rodriguez was walking with friends in January 2013 when they encountered members of a rival gang. Rodriguez pulled out a .22-caliber handgun and fired several shots.

None of the other gang members was struck, but a stray bullet hit the boy as he walked home from school with his mother. The bullet lodged in the boy's spine, and he was hospitalized for several weeks
