Report: Former Rep. Anthony Weiner Hires Campaign Manager

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Former Rep. Anthony Weiner may soon make an official announcement that he is running for New York City mayor.

The website Politico is reporting Weiner has hired a campaign manager and they say multiple sources claim Weiner is likely to announce a bid for mayor sometime next week.

Weiner resigned in June of 2011 in the wake of a Twitter scandal after lewd pictures he sent to at least six women surfaced. That prompted numerous calls from colleagues for the embattled lawmaker to step down.

Weiner Reportedly Hires Campaign Manager

He initially denied sending a salacious photo over Twitter, saying his account had been hacked. He then modified his story, calling it a prank. He eventually confessed that the photos were of him.

"I knew when I did it, almost from the moment I did it, there was no good way for it to end," Weiner told New York Times Magazine last month. "When I sent that fateful tweet."

In that same magazine interview, Weiner acknowledged he'd "be the underdog in any race," adding some people "just don't have room for a second narrative about me."

"It won't be something as pedestrian as 'Do I think I'll win?"' he said. "It will be something more like 'Does it feel like I should be involved in this debate? Someone should be out there saying A, B or C."'

Experts have said if Weiner does try to make a political comeback, he might have a better shot if he runs in Brooklyn or Queens because voters there will have first hand knowledge of his record of accomplishments. He represented areas of both boroughs in Congress.

If he enters the race, Weiner would have to collect 3,500 signatures in June and submit them to the Board of Elections by July.
