Report: Douglas, Zeta-Jones May Be Splitting
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- One of the golden couples of Hollywood – who got married in a lavish ceremony in Manhattan 13 years ago -- may be splitting.
As CBS 2's Don Champion reported Wednesday, reports have surfaced that Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones have separated. For now, the Academy Award winners are living separate lives.
"These are two people who've been through so much and people root for," said Michelle Tan, an editor at People Magazine. The magazine is breaking the separation story on the cover of its latest issue.
The magazine reports recent health problems have created strain on the relationship.
"You have Michael Douglas battling stage 4 throat cancer, and you also have Catherine Zeta-Jones struggling to deal with that as well as her bipolar disorder," Tan said. "They've really just gone on separate paths."
The couple -- reportedly worth $200 million -- got married back in 2000 with a lavish ceremony at Manhattan's Plaza Hotel.
Known for lighting up the red carpet together, the two recently started attending events alone and even vacationing separately, friends have said.
The last time they were seen publicly together was back in April at a Barbra Streisand tribute event.
"They're actually being very cordial throughout this break right now, but they're hopeful that maybe they will reconcile," Tan said.
People reported neither star has filed for divorce or moved toward a legal separation.
Fans told CBS 2 they hope the couple can work it all out.
"I think it's sad," said fan Emily Burdette. "I think it's too bad, but of course it seems amicable, so if they are working out their differences, then they need to do what's best for them."
"They're human," added fan Rosemary DiLorenzo. "They're normal people, and they go through the same stuff we go through all the time. So no biggie – we've got to give them their space."
Douglas and Zeta-Jones have two children together.
