Report: Dolphins Great Dan Marino Sues NFL Over Concussions
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Among the high-profile names that have sued the NFL in recent months, the one reported on Monday night really stands out.
According to a report in the Los Angeles Times, Hall of Fame quarterback Dan Marino was one of 14 players to sue the NFL for concussions, filing a lawsuit last week in U.S. District Court in Philadelphia.
The 18-page complaint alleges the NFL concealed information about football-related brain injuries and misled players, the newspaper reported.
No specific symptoms are alleged for Marino, a nine-time Pro Bowler who played for the Dolphins from 1983-99.
Marino's short-form complaint reads as follows:
"On information and belief, the Plaintiff … sustained repetitive, traumatic sub-concussive and/or concussive head impacts during NFL games and/or practices."
Marino's lawsuit seeks medical monitoring and unspecified financial recovery, the newspaper reported.
Marino, 52, was not immediately reached for comment.
Just last week it was learned that a group of 500 retired players accused the league in a lawsuit of cynically supplying them with powerful painkillers and other drugs that kept them in the game but led to serious complications later in life. Among the plaintiffs were three members of the 1985 Super Bowl champion Chicago Bears, including quarterback Jim McMahon and Hall of Fame defensive end Richard Dent.
That case came less than a year after the NFL agreed to pay $765 million to settle lawsuits from thousands of retired players who accused it of concealing the risks of concussions. A federal judge has yet to approve the settlement, expressing concern the amount is too small.
