Report: Chunk Falls From Washington Square Park Arch
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A chunk of the iconic arch in Washington Square Park came crashing to the ground overnight, according to an advocacy group.
On its "A Walk in the Park" blog, New York City Park Advocates reported that a piece measuring about 6 inches by 10 inches fell from the marble and limestone arch and landed on the concrete below.
The chunk of stone was recovered, but photos captured by New York City Park Advocates showed that it left a mess of white dust on the surrounding sidewalk. Metal barricades were set up nearby, photos showed.
The Beaux-Arts style Tuckahoe marble arch, in the park at the mouth of Fifth Avenue, was dedicated in 1895. It replaced a plaster and wood memorial arch that had been erected six years earlier to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the inauguration of George Washington as president.
The arch underwent a $3 million restoration effort in 2006, New York City Park Advocates pointed out.
