Report: Cashman Wants Girardi Back For 2014 And Beyond
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Brian Cashman has made it clear that he wants manager Joe Girardi to remain with the Yankees beyond 2013. Girardi is the final year of his contract and is set to become a managerial free agent in the winter.
The Yankees have remained firm on their policy of not offering players or managers extensions within existing contracts.
"We'd like to have Joe Girardi back," Cashman told ESPN on Sunday. "We have a great interest in keeping him, and hopefully Joe will be here. I think there's really no reason to believe Joe won't be here."
Girardi has guided the Yankees to a 31-25 record through 56 games. The Yankees are currently trailing the first-place Boston Red Sox by three games in the AL East.
He's considered a hot candidate to win the AL Manager of the Year given the way the Yankees have persevered through numerous injuries during the 2013 season. Girardi has been without a number of key stars for large stretches of the 2013 and hasn't been able to write Derek Jeter or Alex Rodriguez's name in the lineup so far this season. It's unclear whether either will return this season.
Only recently have the Yankees seen Mark Teixeira and Kevin Youkilis return to the lineup. Andy Pettitte will make his return from the disabled list on Monday night when the Yankees take on the Cleveland Indians. The Yankees will also be welcoming back Nick Swisher, who returns to Yankee Stadium for the first time as a visitor after joining the Indians in the offseason.
