Report: Building That Caught Fire Twice Being Demolished
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A building on Fulton Street in the Financial District was being demolished Tuesday, after two fires broke out on consecutive days, according to a published report.
The first fire broke out in the building at 140 Fulton St., just before 7 a.m. on March 17.
The fire swept through the second and third floors of the building, and was ultimately upgraded to a four-alarm blaze. The third-floor ceiling partially collapsed as firefighters fought the blaze, according to published reports.
Three firefighters suffered injuries, reports said.
Less than 24 hours later, the fire rekindled. At around 2 a.m. on March 18 the building was engulfed in flames again and was raised to a third alarm.
Following the fires, the city Department of Buildings ordered the building demolished immediately, according to a DNAInfo report. The building was deemed at risk of collapse due to damage from the fire, the publication reported.
Demolition began this past weekend, and will take several weeks to finish, the publication reported.
The building housed Caruso's Pizza and Pasta on the ground floor; and SamSun Body Work massage clinic, the office of dentist Dr. Alaf B. Hanna, and apartments above.
The neighboring building at 138 Fulton St., has been ordered evacuated until the demolition is complete, the publication reported.
