Report: Beer Sales Could Be Coming To Rutgers Home Games
NEW YORK (WFAN) -- R U thirsty?
Rutgers fans with a taste for suds may not have to rely exclusively on tailgates in 2012. Scarlet Knights athletic director Tim Pernetti "admitted his school is taking a long look" at selling beer within High Point Solutions Stadium after this season, the New York Daily News reported on Wednesday.
Right now, 36 Division I schools sell some form of alcohol. Rutgers is the only holdout left out of eight Big East football programs.
"The trend 10 years ago was the opposite of what it is now," Pernetti said, according to the paper.
In June, West Virginia became the seventh Big East team to allow general concession beer sales.
West Virginia, because of the move, is expected to make somewhere between $500,000 and $1.2 million in additional revenue from sales and sponsorship deals at Mountaineer Field.
And if Rutgers decides against hocking hops?
Well, there's still the tailgate tradition. Scarlet Knights fans now even have a beer they can root behind.
New Jersey's largest craft brewer, Flying Fish Brewing Company, released Exit 9 Hoppy Scarlet Ale in March -- the latest in their big bottle series of beers honoring landmark exits on the New Jersey Turnpike.
