Report: 2 Or 3 Teams Ready To Trade For Darrelle Revis
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- It sounds like Darrelle Revis is as good as gone.
The Jets have two or three teams "prepared to make a trade" for the All-Pro cornerback, according to the New York Daily News. Among the "legitimate buyers" are the San Francisco 49ers, flush with draft picks this year in the double digits, who want to make a deal "sooner rather than later," the Daily News reported.
"(Revis is) gone," a source told the paper. "This is happening. They're moving him. They can't keep him. They're rebuilding. They're starting fresh."
The Atlanta Falcons could also enter the mix, the Daily News reported.
According to the paper, it's all at the behest of Jets owner Woody Johnson, who "never had any intention" of handing Revis a long-term, mega-bucks deal after the cornerback's testy 2010 holdout.
"NY Daily News reports Jets have two teams interested in Darrelle Revis," Adam Schefter of ESPN tweeted Wednesday. "This much is known: Jets are shopping him and determined to deal him."
Revis — widely considered the NFL's top cornerback — has been rehabbing from a torn ACL suffered early in the 2012 season. The 27-year-old will become an unrestricted free agent after the upcoming season if he doesn't skip any mandatory team activities. He'll be looking to sign one of the NFL's most lucrative contracts for a defensive player — something the Jets might not be willing to dole out.
Trades can't be made official until March 12.
The Daily News described new general manager John Idzik as wary about consummating a trade too soon. But with a free agent market full of decent cornerbacks and the Jets looking to rebuild, waiting even until the draft may not be the best move.
"If he plays for the Jets this year, (Idzik's) going to be fired in three years, because he will have messed it up," a source told the paper.
Idzik reportedly shopped Revis to several teams at the combine in Indianapolis, with coach Rex Ryan and the rest of the organization "out of the loop," the Daily News reported last week.
If a trade goes down, Ryan will lose one of his favorite players. And he may not be too happy about it.
"There will be fireworks," a team source told ESPN.
In a video with Seahawks fullback Michael Robinson for "The Real Robinson Report," Revis said the rumors "hit home" and spoke excitedly about the possibility of joining a San Francisco squad that came so close to hoisting the Lombardi Trophy.
"Looking at their roster and their team, I would just be an addition to help them win that trophy," Revis said in the video, which was posted to YouTube on Monday. "Would it be awesome? I mean, yeah."
And the 49ers want him, right?
It depends on what you read. San Francisco is ready to deal, according to the Daily News. But a source told ESPN the Niners consider themselves ".001" interested "on a scale of 1-10."
