Report: 18 Potential Human Remains Found In WTC Debris
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A total of 18 pieces that might be human remains were found in debris from around the World Trade Center, according to a published report.
The New York City Medical Examiner's Office told SILive.com that 16 fragments were found on Tuesday. The Medical Examiner's Office confirmed earlier to CBSNewYork.com that two more potential human remains were found on Monday, in the debris that had been lying in the Fresh Kills landfill on Staten Island.
DNA testing is required before any remains can be identified.
Last Friday, officials announced that the Medical Examiner's Office and other city agencies, including police, fire and sanitation departments, would take part in a 10-week operation at the Fresh Kills park area.
Workers were expected to sift through nearly 600 cubic yards of construction debris from the World Trade Center site.
The last time the city did a comprehensive sifting of debris was in 2010.
Since 2006, the remains of 34 previously unrecovered victims were identified through DNA.
Of the 2,752 victims killed at the World Trade Center site -- previously known as ground zero -- 1,634 have been identified.
