Repaving Of Palisades Interstate Parkway Begins Monday
FORT LEE, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Repaving on the Palisades Interstate Parkway is set to begin Monday night in New Jersey.
Crews will be milling and repaving from 8:30 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. in the northbound lanes along an 11-mile stretch beginning at the George Washington Bridge. The contractor will be allowed to close one travel lane during off-peak hours.
CBS 2 broke the story in March of the festering roadway, which left vehicles wrecked and even sent some people to the hospital over the winter. The New Jersey section of the road has not been paved since 1996.

"It was worse than some Third World countries that I've been to that I shall not name," New Jersey Commissioner of Transportation James Simpson told CBS 2 on March 8. "I could not believe that there was a highway in New Jersey that was as bad as it was."
"He clearly saw that the road was in bad shape and was in desperate need of repair," James Hall, executive director of the Palisades Interstate Park Commission, said in March.
The transportation commissioner fast-tracked the $11 million project that will resurface the road and three scenic overlooks as well as repairs to 13 bridges as needed.
The parkway runs 42 miles from the George Washington Bridge in Fort Lee to the Bear Mountain Bridge in New York. It was completed in 1958.
