Repairs May Cause Traffic Nightmare at Holland Tunnel
NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Think the evening rush is a mess at the Holland Tunnel?
Just wait until next week when a construction project in Tribeca is expected to snarl traffic in and around the tunnel for the next 3 to 5 years.
Starting Sunday, the city's Department of Design and Construction says crews will be replacing some water pipes -- one of which dates back to 1870.
Drivers won't be able to enter the tunnel from Hudson Street and for motorists entering Manhattan from New Jersey, Hudson Street will shrink from four lanes to two.
All New Jersey bound Holland Tunnel traffic must use either Canal Street, Varick Street, or the Broome Street/Watts Street approaches, according to the Dept. of Design and Construction.
Motorists are encouraged to use northbound West Street to turn right onto Canal Street as the preferred entrance to the tunnel.
Traffic signal timing will also be adjusted at the intersection for New Jersey bound motorists.
The closure will allow workers to repair waters mains and connect them to a new water tunnel.
