Rep. Peter King To Go Toe-To-Toe With Professional In Boxing Match
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) - Tough-talking Long Island Republican Rep. Peter King is gearing up for a fight that has nothing to do with the sequester.
Congressman King, 68, will be lacing up his boxing gloves for a two-round exhibition bout against New York state light heavyweight kickboxing champion, "Irish'' Josh Foley, at a pub in Wantagh, N.Y.
"Josh is a real fighter. I'm doing it for the sport and hopefully he's going to hold back on me a bit, but we're going to go at it for two rounds," King told 1010 WINS.
The fight will go down on Saturday, but don't expect Mrs. King to be there.
"It's my wife's birthday on Saturday night and she refuses to go to the fight and she says, she tells me not to call her from the hospital, that I'm on my own," King joked.
King said he weighs in at about 230 pounds and has been training for about nine years.
"I found that boxing is...it's a great outlet. It gets rid of a lot of stress, it's good cardiovascular exercise and it just gets a lot of out of your system, so I'm looking forward to it on Saturday," he said.
The congressman joked that while he plans to throw real punches, Foley will probably throw "sort-of-real punches.''
"Being in Congress, you know, it builds up your stress, it builds up the anxiety, it builds up the anger and I can take it out on Josh Foley. I just hope he doesn't take it out on me," King said.
King said that back in 1991 he boxed with former pro Seamus McDonagh in an exhibition bout on the 20th anniversary of the first Joe Frazier-Muhammad Ali fight.
