Rename River Ave. For Mo Rivera? Boomer & Carton Say No Way
NEW YORK (WFAN) -- The Yankee Stadium subway stop is famously located on East 161st Street and River Avenue in the Bronx.
And as we all know, legendary closer Mariano Rivera is calling it quits after this season.
Put two and two together, and what do you get? Rivera Avenue.
That's what Tom Ferrara, the CEO of Future Value Associates, would like to see the Bronx street renamed to, according to the New York Post.
Renaming River Ave. For Mo Rivera?
"It hit me," Ferrara told the newspaper. "But for two letters, that could be a wonderfully appropriate street name."
Of course, if you add an "A" to the end of "River" and an "S" before "Ave," you get "Rivera Save."
"Other than a few Red Sox fans," Ferrara asked Mike Vaccaro of the New York Post, "have you ever heard anyone say even one negative word about Mariano Rivera?"
But it's not such a simple matter.
According to the New York City Council, "Proposed honorees must be individuals who are deceased and of significant importance to New York City," the newspaper reported.
At the bottom of his column on Wednesday, Vaccaro endorsed the idea of Rivera Avenue, writing, "I can't think of anyone (who would object to the name change). Can you, Mr. (Mayor Mike) Bloomberg?"
Well there are at least a couple of guys who aren't proponents of the idea.
"Do you want to do something, you want to name something after Mariano Rivera? Find a place in the Bronx," WFAN co-host Boomer Esiason said on Wednesday. "Build a field in honor of Mariano Rivera and hopefully all those kids that live in that area are inspired by his name being on that field, and they'll go and play baseball. And they'll get off the streets and they'll give the guns back and all this other crap, and you get somebody inspired by the use of Mariano Rivera's name."
Boomer's co-host agreed.
"I don't think we should rename it either," Craig Carton said. "And I know we all go, 'But Craig, he was so good. He's the best ever. We should rename a street after him.' Why? Why am I renaming River Avenue 'Rivera Avenue?' I'm with you 100 percent. I wouldn't have named (the West Side Highway) the Joe DiMaggio Highway!"
A Twitter account, @161stRIVERAave, has been created in an effort to promote the proposed name change.
