Members from the Red Cross taught basic skills, including CPR, applying pressure if someone is bleeding and the importance of calling 911 in an emergency.
The day of workshops highlighted what occurred after the Arizona congresswoman and others at a campaign event were shot in the head outside a Tucson supermarket in January. Many victims, including Giffords, were aided by people at the scene who administered CPR and first aid.
"Better than 50 percent of the people who go into cardiac arrest, they receive no care because people are afraid they are going to catch a disease doing mouth to mouth, but what we found out is just doing chest compressions could make a world of difference," Red Cross representative Matt Crimmons said.
Lauren Meyers said she wants to have the knowledge in case her family one day needs help.
"I do have kids and I think about that and I think I could be anywhere at anytime and something could happen," Meyers said.
