Red Cross Gives $500,000 Grant To Help NYC Seniors Still Recovering From Sandy
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) - The American Red Cross has given the Food Bank of New York a $500,000 grant toward its recovery efforts for senior citizens impacted by superstorm Sandy.
The Food Bank announced Thursday it will distribute the funds to its network of member organizations.
Those groups will help seniors make use of assistance like a grocery program, tax services, and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program - better known as food stamps.
The funds will be used to help almost 5,700 senior citizens who live along the east and south shores of Staten Island, in the Coney Island and Red Hook sections of Brooklyn and the Far Rockaway section of Queens.
The Red Cross has previously given $4.48 million to the Food Bank to help people affected by Sandy with emergency feeding services.
In all, the relief organization raised more than $308 million for the Sandy recovery effort.
