Red Cross Awards $25K For NYC Coat Drive
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- The American Red Cross has awarded a $25,000 grant to support a coat drive for New Yorkers affected by Superstorm Sandy.
The grant went to New York Cares. It will fund the purchase of coats for children and adults in communities throughout Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island still recovering from the storm.
"The Red Cross has been working closely with New York Cares for more than a year now, to send out Red Cross volunteers to help rebuild homes, clean up parks and other important work," Josh Lockwood, regional CEO for the American Red Cross in Greater New York, told 1010 WINS.
The Red Cross says New York Cares has received requests for more than 100,000 coats this year as part of its annual coat drive. The organization has collected 18,500 coats since Nov. 12.
"New York Cares approached the Red Cross and said they were having a shortfall in their coat collection for their annual coat drive in Sandy-affected communities," Lockwood told WCBS 880. "We were eager to help them meet their goal and to provide coats to families who need them."
The coat drive ends Feb. 7.
New York Cares runs volunteer programs for 1,300 nonprofits, agencies and public schools throughout the city.
