Red Bulls, Galaxy Play To A 1-1 Draw
CARSON, California (AP) — Former France and Arsenal forward Thierry Henry scored for New York in the fourth minute and Landon Donovan countered for Los Angeles in the 41st as the Red Bulls and Galaxy played to a 1-1 draw in Major League Soccer on Saturday.
In a match between the two MLS division leaders, neither team was able to get the go-ahead goal in the second half despite a flurry of chances.
Henry took advantage of a Galaxy defensive breakdown and knocked the ball into an empty net for his fourth goal of the season early in the first half.
Donovan scored the equalizer for the Galaxy on a header off a corner delivered by David Beckham. It was only the third goal of the season allowed by New York, which had won three straight.
In other matches Saturday, Toronto FC beat Houston Dynamo 2-1, Real Salt Lake defeated Chivas USA 1-0 and the Columbus Crew drew 1-1 with the Seattle Sounders.
Joao Plata scored in the 50th minute and set up another goal in his MLS debut to lead Toronto.
After Toronto forward Nick Soolsma was taken down in the Houston penalty area by Andre Hainault, the 19-year-old Ecuadorean converted the penalty past Dynamo goalkeeper Tally Hall into the top left corner.
Maicon Santos scored off a Plata pass in the 81st minute to put Toronto up 2-0.
Loval Palmer pulled a goal back for Houston in the 87th minute.
In Sandy, Utah, Will Johnson tapped in the decisive goal for Real Salt Lake in the 87th minute after reserve midfielder Collen Warner sent in a cross as Johnson streaked to the far post.
With the win, Salt Lake stretched its home unbeaten streak to 28 games.
Salt Lake sustained a costly injury in the 37th minute when Chivas forward Marcos Mondaini took down Javier Morales with a hard tackle from behind, breaking the Argentine's left ankle. Mordaini was given a red card.
Emilio Renteria converted a penalty in the 67th minute to help Columbus extend its unbeaten streak to seven games. The Crew, who haven't lost since their season opener, have scored half of their eight goals via penalty kicks.
Fredy Montero put Seattle up in the seventh minute by scoring off a cross by Erik Friberg.
Elsewhere, the New England Revolution and the Colorado Rapids played to a scoreless draw, as did FC Dallas and DC United and the Vancouver Whitecaps and Chicago Fire.
