Rash Of Luxury Car Thefts Plagues Hamptons
SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Police on Long Island issued a warning Wednesday about a rash of luxury car thefts in the Hamptons.
Thieves have stolen 18 vehicles over the last few weeks in towns across the eastern portion of Suffolk County, according to Southampton Town Police. The car thieves target mostly newer model Mercedes Benzes, BMWs and Range Rovers, police said.
The thefts have usually occurred after 10 p.m., leaving the thieves ample time to get away before the victims discover their vehicles missing the following morning.
Police advised that car owners take precautions to safeguard their vehicles by making sure they're locked and the car alarms are set. Valuables, including cellphones and electronics, should also be removed, police advised.
