Randolph, N.J., Man Pleads Guilty To Murdering, Robbing Dad
MORRISTOWN, N.J. (AP) -- A man who fatally shot his father during a robbery at their Morris County home has pleaded guilty to felony murder charges.
Brendon Matos, 28, of Randolph, also pleaded guilty Tuesday to robbery and a weapons offense stemming from the July 2011 slaying of 56-year-old Nelson Matos. He faces up to 40 years in state prison when he's sentenced April 25.
In return for his plea, Morris County prosecutors agreed to dismiss several other charges against Matos.
Authorities have said the two men were alone in the home when the robbery occurred. They said Brendon Matos wanted to get money so he could buy drugs.
Matos admitted in court Tuesday that he shot his father during the course of a robbery in order to obtain money, The Newark Star-Ledger reported. He admitted to using his father's weapon, which he wasn't legally allowed to use because he had been convicted of felony robbery charge in Florida in 2008, according to the newspaper.
