Police Search For 4 Armed Robbery Suspects Following Tense Situation In Rahway, N.J.
RAHWAY, N.J. (CBSNewYork) – Police are trying to track down four armed robbery suspects in following a tense situation in New Jersey.
The robbery took place around 4 p.m. Friday in Union County.
Police initially said they believed the suspects barricaded themselves inside a two-family home on Main Street in Rahway. Police also believed they might be holding hostages.
The nearby Union County Performing Arts Center and downtown area were evacuated as a precaution.
Around 6 p.m., a SWAT team searched the home, but did not find the suspects inside.
Cellphone video taken by a neighbor shows armed SWAT teams making their way down the street as they prepared to break down the door.
Other neighbors told CBS2's Valerie Castro they watched as police tried to communicate with the suspects.
"They pulled the bullhorn out, nice and loud. I was able to hear it," resident Kevin Caldwell said. "They told people, 'if you're in there, come out with your hands up.'"
"It was so crazy, and this like never happens, never happens here. This is stuff I've seen like in movies," resident Ny'Asia Hamilton added. "I was anxious, nervous. I didn't know what was happening."
It's unclear whether there were any hostages, but police said there were no injuries.
The Rahway River runs along the back of the home and police could be seen searching that area, Castro reported.
The four suspects are still at large.
