R.A. Dickey Was Disappointed To Hear That 'Superhero' A-Rod Was Cheating
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Former Mets starter R.A. Dickey gave a refreshing take on Alex Rodriguez and the PED issue in baseball when he spoke to the Daily News on Thursday.
Dickey played alongside A-Rod in Texas in 2001 and 2003.
"When I played with him, I was in awe of him," Dickey told the Daily News. "You're talking about an AL MVP winner on a last-place team. Playing with him at that point in his career, he was unbelievable."
Rodriguez is currently waiting to appeal his 211-game Biogenesis suspension. Dickey was shocked when he learned that A-Rod admitted to using PEDs in 2009.
"In retrospect, I am incredibly disappointed," Dickey said. "My awe -- it's like a kid learning that a superhero is cheating. But trying to take the human element, I have made mistakes, too. A lot of them. So I know that it's painful when it comes to a place where you have to look those mistakes in the eye, accept the consequences for them, and own up to them, and take whatever penalty there is. And that's where he is."
Dickey is having a subpar season in Toronto after earning the 2012 National League Cy Young Award as a member of the Mets. Through 27 starts with the Jays, Dickey is 9-12 with a 4.49 ERA.
