Manhattan Residents Fed Up Over Noisy Bridge Traffic
NEW YORK, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Residents who live on the Manhattan side of the Queensboro Bridge say the noise from blaring horns and traffic has become unbearable.
Around 175,000 vehicles travel across the Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge each day. According to the city, that makes it the most utilized of the East River bridges, WLNY 1055's Matt Kozar reported.
Longtime resident Barry Schneider blames the ride-share company Uber for contributing to the congestion, as well as traffic cops for not properly managing the flow of traffic.
Schneider believes a toll on the bridge would help.
"If we had a toll on the Queensboro Bridge, one-third of those vehicles would no longer be coming into the Midtown Manhattan," Schneider said.
According to East Side resident Naomi Perle, it's not just cars causing a commotion. Frustrated residents can also be heard cursing and shouting at the drivers.
"We're just getting more things added to our area," Perle said. "This goes on like this all the time."
"We are looking at various ways that can mitigate traffic, including signal timing," Margaret Forgione, Manhattan Borough Commissioner said in a statement. "We will work with the NYPD regarding enforcement about honking, which is not allowed unless in emergency situations."
