Police: Would-Be Thief Struck By Train After Snatching iPhone
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A would-be thief caused major trouble on the subways this morning, police said.
It all began at around 8 a.m. on board an M train at the 64th Street and Broadway station in Woodside.
A 33-year-old suspect tried to steal a 13-year-old's iPhone, police said. The suspect punched someone who came to the teen's aid, according to police.
Officers responded to the scene and the suspect took off, running across the express tracks, police said. That's when a passing F train brushed the suspect, injuring his face, according to police.
The suspect was taken to Elmhurst Hospital and is said to be in good condition. Charges have yet to be announced.
The incident caused service to be suspended for about an hour between Queens and Manhattan on the M, R, E and F subway lines. Service resumed with extensive delays around 9:15 a.m.
The Long Island Rail Road added extra stops to some trains to accommodate customers impacted by the subway suspension. The LIRR was cross-honoring NYC Transit fares between Jamaica and Penn Station, as well as Jamaica and Atlantic Terminal.
