Queens Village Residents Want Street Named After Slain Cop
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Residents in Queens Village, where NYPD Officer Brian Moore was fatally shot last week, called for an end to gun violence Saturday and also asked that a street be named for the fallen cop.
They held a vigil at Hollis Avenue and 212th Street, near where Moore was gunned down May 2.
"He gave his life for the community, and the Bible says there's no greater love than the man that laid down his life for his friends," said Pastor Larry Davidson of the Resurrection Celebration Center. "So anyone that would die for me and die for my community is a friend of mine."
Moore, 25, was laid to rest Friday, as thousands of police officers from across the country paid their respects.
He was shot in the face by an armed suspect while on patrol with partner Officer Erik Jansen, 30.
Investigators alleged that Demetrius Blackwell, 35, fired the shot that killed Moore.
They said officers Moore and Jansen were in an unmarked cruiser and tried to stop a Blackwell after they thought they saw and put a gun in his pants.
Blackwell allegedly opened fire before the officers could get out of their car.
After a 90-minute manhunt, police arrested Blackwell a block away where neighbor said he was trying to blend in with the crowd.
Following an exhaustive search, police recovered the .38 special they believe Blackwell used to fire the deadly shots.
