Police: 2 Toddlers Found Wandering The Streets Of Queens Alone
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork)-- A baby was found in the middle of the street just before 8 a.m. on Saturday, police said.
Surveillance video shows the child at 145th Street and 123rd Avenue in Queens, CBS2's Steve Langford reported.
"The baby girl was standing right here," witness Christine Browne said.
Browne scrambled to protect what turned out to be two siblings, a two-year-old girl and a three-year-old boy, who were out on the streets hidden by a car.
"I lift up the girl she is crying profusely, she's all soaking wet with urine," Browne said.
The residents wrapped the children in coats and called 911.
Another witness, who did not want to appear on camera, told CBS2 when she comforted the little children they were very cold and afraid.
The children live a few doors away, where police said the grandmother, looking after the youngsters, fell asleep while the two little ones got out the front door.
"It happened to be an honest accident, mistakes happen," the mother of the children said.
She told CBS2 she's been working overnight.
"I'm very shaken up and obviously I'm very upset that it happened, but the kids are okay," she said.
But two other neighbors said a couple of weeks earlier, they personally rescued the little boy from the same intersection.
"I don't know anything about that. This is first to my knowledge that I know it's happened," the mother said regarding the claim.
The children are back at home after being examined at a hospital. Police said there will be no criminal charges.
