Queens Street Named For Slain NYPD Detective Brian Moore
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- One of New York's Finest received a big honor Friday after losing his life in the line of duty.
The corner of 222nd Street and 92nd Avenue outside the 105th Precinct in Queens Village was co-named "Detective 1st Grade Brian Moore Way" as a tribute to the fallen officer.
The precinct is where NYPD Detective Brian Moore worked during his five years with the department.
Police Commissioner Bill Bratton spoke at the ceremony. He called Moore an exceptional young officer who made more than 159 arrests and receive two exceptional police service medals.
"As every little boy and girl walks past this intersection in years ahead, looks up and sees that name and asks 'Who was Brian Moore?' the officer in this station for all time will be able to answer, 'Brian Moore, detective, a guardian of the city, a hero,'" Bratton said.
"Detective Brian Moore exemplified the best of our police force: a brave and selfless young man who gave his life while working to protect all of ours," Mayor Bill de Blasio said in a statement. "New York City's Finest face unspeakable dangers each day – yet in the face of violence, Detective Moore responded to the call with no hesitation. Our city is safer and stronger because of police officers like Brian Moore, and we will forever be indebted to his family."
Moore was shot in the face by an armed suspect during a traffic stop in Queens on May 2, and died two days later.
Demetrius Blackwell, 35, has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder and other charges in Moore's shooting death. Investigators said Blackwell walked up to Moore's unmarked patrol car and opened fire.
If convicted, Blackwell faces life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Bratton posthumously promoted Moore to detective first grade. The 25-year-old was the son, nephew and cousin of police officers.
