NEW YORK — A New York City Police officer and a bystander were shot in Queens on Tuesday evening, police sources say.

The suspect was shot and killed, according to sources.

It happened around 6:30 p.m. at 164th Street and Jamaica Avenue.

According to police sources, officers were responding to a call for a robbery in progress at a shopping center in the area when there was an exchange of gunfire between at least one officer and the suspect.

Police sources tell CBS News New York one officer was shot in the leg and was taken to a Jamaica Hospital in a marked patrol car. He is expected to survive, sources said.

Sources say a female civilian was also shot in the leg and is expected to survive.

The alleged gunman was shot multiple times, police sources said.

The NYPD says drivers and pedestrians should avoid the area of 161st Street and Jamaica Avenue while they continue to investigate.
